Navy Method
BMI Method
--The Navy method estimates body fat using neck, waist, and hip circumference measurements along with height. It was developed by the U.S. Navy for fitness assessments and correlates reasonably well with hydrostatic weighing.
Men: %BF = 86.010 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
Women: %BF = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387
The BMI method uses the Deurenberg formula: %BF = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × age) - (10.8 × sex) - 5.4, where sex = 1 for men, 0 for women.
Accuracy: The Navy method typically has an error margin of ±3-4% compared to DEXA. Read our Navy vs DEXA comparison for details.
